The Hillcrest Elementary School Media Center, through its media services program, acts as the center of the school for comprehensive information, instructional technology, and media services. Every student participates in a library orientation at the start of the school year. Students have access to the media center through a semi-flexible schedule, and through whole group, structured technology lessons. The library media center houses a computer lab composed of 28 Gateway Tablets and a SMART Board for interactive instruction. Programs such as Easy Tech, Kids College, and Compass/Odyssey Learning are utilized in the media center to teach technology skills and reinforce the curriculum in grades 1-4. Students in grades 5-6 are instructed in the use of Microsoft Office, hardware components, HTML and research.
The media center houses over 8, 000 titles. The collection includes both print and non-print resources. The Alabama Virtual Library is the primary online resource utilized for research in the library while Atriuum is used for electronic circulation and administration of library materials. Atriuum, a product of Book Systems of Huntsville, Alabama allows library patrons to search the card catalog via the Internet using their web browser.
The Alabama Virtual Library is available for teacher and student use. The Alabama Virtual Library provides all students, teachers, and citizens of the State of Alabama with online access to essential library and information resources. It is primarily a group of online databases that have magazine, journal, and newspaper articles for research. Through the AVL, an equitable core of information sources are available to every student and citizen in Alabama, raising the level of excellence in schools and communities across the state. How It Works: Student reads a book. Students choose books at their appropriate reading levels and read them at their own pace. Student takes a quiz. Student and teacher get immediate feedback on their reading progress.
